TOC [Abk. für gleichbed. engl. total organic carbon]: gesamter organisch gebundener Kohlenstoff der im Wasser gelösten oder ungelösten org. Substanzen (TOC = DOC + POC), anzugeben in mg/L Wasser. TOC u. CSB sind wichtige Kenngrößen des Abwassers.

[Abkürzung für englisch total organic carbon »gesamter organisch gebundener Kohlenstoff«], zusammen mit dem chemischen Sauerstoffbedarf wichtige Kenngröße für die Belastung eines Gewässers mit organischen Stoffen. Die Bestimmung erfolgt meist durch Oxidation der organischen Substanz zu Kohlendioxid und dessen Bestimmung z. B. durch Infrarotspektroskopie.
